How Time Travel Works In The MCU

We all were confused when the smart-hulk tried to explain time travel to the team when Avengers was planning to go back in time and kill the baby Thanos.

But here is a simple explanation of how time travel works in the MCU with an example:

There is one rule you should remember about time travel in MCU, “CHANGING THE PAST WOULD NOT CHANGE THE FUTURE” the only thing changing the past will do is, it will create a new timeline with a different ending and the original timeline will have the same ending.

For example when the avengers took all 5 infinity stones from the past (using time travel machine), it created 2 timelines:

Timeline 1: Where Avengers came and took the infinity stones to their timeline. So in this timeline, the infinity stones are gone.

Timeline 2: Where Thanos destroyed the infinity stones, the Avengers brought infinity stones from the past (which is now a different timeline).

Will The Avengers Bring Back Iron-Man

Can the Avengers bring back Iron man from the past? the answer is, yes they can but they will not do so, and to understand why they will not bring him back, let’s see what will happen if they brought him back :

If the Avengers brought Iron-man back from the past, it will create 2 timelines: (just like the previous example)

Timeline 1: Where avengers came and took the Iron-man to their timeline, so now Iron-Man is missing from the timeline 1.

Timeline 2: Where Iron-man has died after using infinity stones and another iron-man from the past (which is now a different timeline) lives.

This way, Iron man does exist but he is missing from timeline 1, which is not the solution, the solution would be having iron-man in all the timelines, which is not possible due to the type of time travel adopted by MCU.

But what about Gamora! she also died and she came back using time machine?

How Did Gamora Came Back

As explained earlier, if we brought someone from the past they will be missing from the newly created timeline.

So when the endgame Thanos realized what the avengers were trying to do, he took his entire ship with (Gamora) to a different timeline using the time machine the avengers created.

So the Gamora in the endgame is not the same, she is a different Gamora from a different timeline, the reason why MCU did no send her to her original timeline is because in her original timeline she is still living with Thanos and nebula and she is yet to meet ‘the guardians of the galaxy’.

So if she goes back to her original timeline she will have no one because Thanos does not exist anymore, thanks to Iron-man, and the future nebula has already killed the nebula from the original timeline.

So, MCU decided to bring back Gamora as no one is waiting for her in her original timeline, and this timeline needs Gamora because Thanos sacrificed her for the time stone.
